Basil is a low-growing annual herb from tropical climates, with opposite lustrous green, oval, serrated, silky-textured leaves with white or purplish tubular flowers. It comes from India where it is used in traditional medicine, and is considered a sacred plant. According to some cultures, basil has the power to scare away evil spirits. The Greeks and Romans took the plant throughout Europe, it is currently very popular in gastronomy.
